September 12, 1989
Summer officially ended at 8:00 p.m., September 12th 1989 with the first autumn meeting of the T.T's!
All members present with the exception of Holliday. The business meeting was brief and eminently forgettable, as was the Totts Brut ($9.65), a poor Californian sparkling wine.
We then sampled Valtellina Superiore Sassella 1984 ($10.70) and Valtellina Antica Rhaetica 1980 ($12.10). These reds were from the Valtellina area of Tuscany and were accompanied by some literature which all members, including the scribe, have since mislaid. The latter was judged substantially better than the former but both were thought thin with poor finish and not worth the cash.
Next we sampled Frescobaldi Remole 1986 ($6.70), an excellent buy at the price and eminently "slurpible." Indecently it is the house wine in that most excellent Toronto eating house, "La Fennice."
We proceeded to two Gewürztraminer - Dopff & Irion Gewürztraminer Alsace 1987 ($10.25) and Pedrizzetti Gewürztraminer Californian 1988 ($6.80). Both were excellent - the former the best wine of the evening, the latter surprisingly palatable and the best value of the evening.
We closed with dessert and coffee accompanied by an appealing dessert wine, Mavrodaphne of Patras, judged acceptable and reasonable at $6.75.
