Tuesday Tipplers
Fontana Tasting

The Tipplers with the exception of Bill made the journey downtown to Joe's Christmas tasting. It was a lovely winter evening;
snow falling and the Christmas lights in Victoria park in full twinkle. In the spirit of the season my gift to the Tipplers was to offer
a fairly simple blind tasting. I served up 2 wines from each of the three feature countries. This proved to be a daunting
task for some. Cabernova $$$$ (Tod) did eventually identify the three counties correctly; France, Italy & Spain. Once the countries
were revealed thatís when the matching sheet was provided to the resident wine experts; the sheet included the name of the wines,
rating, price and some tasting notes. The challenge was to match the numbered wine bottles to the wines on the sheet.
This proved to be more difficult than anticipated; the highest score was 50% turned in by Pietro di Calabria (Peter)
The favourite wine of the evening was the La Rioja Alta 2004, the French wines also showed well; the Chateaneuf-du-Pape edged
out its more prestigious cousin Cote-Rotie. Bordeaux Bob favoured the Priorat. I believe the Brunello's elegance got lost in the crowd
with these heavy hitters. The $100 Amarone was a bit deceptive and stumped the group, no one got it and it wasn't the clan's favourite.
